Exceptional C16th sculpture
A fine Trachyandesite sculpture of the virgin. The black volcanic stone lends further drama to this striking sculpture, the flowing garments have incredible movement when viewed from any angle. The face and positioning of the hands have a serene countenance. An imposing and extraordinary late medieval work of art.

Virgin
A small sample was taken for observation
Nature of the stone
Dark gray rock with fine vacuoles, visible under a magnifying glass, and small white crystals.
This rock is of volcanic origin of the trachy-andesite type and could come from Auvergne, from the volcanoes of Volvic which supplied the building stone to the city of Clermont-Ferrand. Another possibility would be the surroundings of Orcival and St Nectaire (25 to 30 km south of Clermont-Ferrand) because these villages have churches built and decorated with sculptures in this type of dark volcanic rock.
