18th c painted wall cabinet

£0.00
sold out

A rare and incredibly beautiful two door wall cabinet with shelves retaining the original Chinoiserie painted decoration. The bowed front is also reflected in the shelves, to the sides it is shaped and has octagonal cut outs.

The paint work has temples and figures and trees as well as floral motifs. The shelves are painted in a contrasting red and the middle shelf has what appear to be swallows, though they may be ho ho birds, they are quite faint.

The interior of the cabinet has been later covered in hand blocked paper which would seem to date to the 1820s, with a print to the centre depicting a king. The original lock and catches are present, there is one replaced hinge and what may be a replaced escutcheon with an original one remaining. There has been a repair to the top shelf as seen in the photographs and a repair to one side, these are both historical. The piece has a very country house feel to it, the repairs being very “make do” I have chosen to leave it as is as I feel it has great integrity in its present condition.
