Rare C17th alms box
A rare alms box dating to the seventeenth century. Made from mixed timber including oak, walnut and deal, thickly cut, with a black painted finish over an earlier green paint. The ironwork strapping is fixed by small blacksmith made iron nails. There are two money slots, one in the top and one in the side, the lock is gone but the lock plate remains, the hinges are substantial. The likelihood is that it was made for a church and it retains its dry unwaxed surface

Height 19cm ( 7 1/2”)
Width 46.5 cm ( 18 1/4”)
