Rare early C18th chest of drawers

sold out

An extremely rare and possibly unique chest of drawers. Six drawers with two void compartments, most likely for storage of books, this interesting and attractive piece is made from solid oak boards with Gothic arch cutouts to the sides a simple moulding to the top and original iron carrying handles to the sides. The early dovetailed drawers have the original oak knobs and the piece has a superb patina. The backboards have inscribed HN 1614, this is probably a mark for an estate or institution.

The exact purpose of this piece is open to conjecture, it may have been to store books and manuscripts or, perhaps, to display objects or vestments, the construction is high quality as is the timber chosen, yet there is a restrained dignity that would suggest it was functional rather than a show piece. A remarkable piece of early English furniture in good original condition.
