C16th small chest
A good quality Elizabethan chest in very sound original order. The construction is most unusual as the central stile is actually a piece applied to the solid one piece front, I have not seen this method of construction before but it has probably saved this little chest from having linenfold or other carved panels later fitted in an unscrupulous attempt to raise its value, ironically undecorated chests from this period are now quite rare as a consequence. The chest is of extremely good quality with moulded edges inside and out, the original hinges, lock and hasp are present, the single plank top has a moulded frame to the exterior edges and the piece has a fine dry surface reminiscent of chests found in churches.
English. 1550 - 1580
Height 48.5 cm ( 19”)
Width 91 cm ( 36”)
Depth 45.5 cm ( 18’)
