C18th winged armchair
A fine winged armchair in oak with many early design elements. Turned front legs and well shaped wings, stop chamfering to many of the rails including the back and sides, this bold and large scale chair also has a curved back which is most unusual and adds to its comfort. Rope seated with a new feather cushion which I have had made and covered in Donegal tweed. The chair is in good condition and has a warm patina.
These distinctive and comfortable winged chairs were romantically named “lambing chairs” by the antique dealers of the early 20th century and the name has become an accepted term though it is likely that they have less to do with lambing season and much to do with draughty houses and bad weather. This one hales from the Yorkshire Dales though the type is also found in Wales. I have given a wide possible date range for this chair as the Dales furniture held to it’s traditions and dated furniture from this region often turns up with a much later date than the piece would be usually assessed.
